My Second Home’s Curriculum
Children’s joy and happiness are a big part of their learning. At My Second Home, we encourage them to have fun as a part of their education, with child-led activities which are adapted to their abilities and interests.
We care for children from 6 weeks to 5 years and use Pre-Birth to Three, realising the Ambition & Curriculum for Excellence. All of our children are encouraged to learn through play and with kindness, prompting them to use their own curiosity and problem-solving skills to achieve goals and expand their learning.
Curriculum for Excellence places learners at the heart of education. At its centre are four fundamental capacities. These capacities reflect and recognise the lifelong nature of education and learning. The Curriculum for Excellence aims to ensure that all children and young people in Scotland develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they will need if they are to flourish in life, learning and work, now and in the future, and to appreciate their place in the world. At My Second Home we believe our innovative approach gives children a bright and positive start in life and incorporates these two curriculums perfectly for all our little ones.
Our Programs
Cosy Cubs (0-2 Years)
Our babies program offers a nurturing and personalised environment for your child. With a cosy, warm room designed exclusively for just six babies, we ensure each child receives individualised care and attention. Our program embraces heuristic play and sensory exploration, fostering curiosity and development in a safe and engaging setting.
Curious Cubs (2-3 years)
Our 2-3s program allows them to thrive in our beautiful Reggio Emilia-inspired classroom! Designed to spark curiosity and creativity, our space is filled with natural resources to ignite young imaginations. Through sensory and heuristic play, we encourage hands-on exploration and learning in a vibrant and engaging environment. With free-flow access to our outdoor classroom, children can seamlessly transition between indoor and outdoor activities, fostering a dynamic learning environment that promotes curiosity and discovery.
Brilliant Bears (3-4 years)
Our 3-4s program is rich with natural resources that provoke inquiry and discovery inviting children to be competent, curious individuals. With a Reggio-inspired approach, we foster independence and emphasise child-led learning, empowering each child to thrive and discover at their own pace. children embark on a journey of discovery across three distinct learning spaces. Each room is thoughtfully designed to cater to the unique interests and developmental needs of our young learners.
Brilliant Bears (4-5 years)
Our pre-school program offers our young learners early years literacy, numeracy, and digital technology skills, laying a strong foundation for future academic success. Our educators act as facilitators, guiding children's learning experiences and continuously monitoring their progress to ensure personalised growth and development.
At My Second Home, traditional learning meets 21st century learning, where we instil important life skills like table manners and proper utensil use, while encouraging routines and utilising classic resources like pencils, paper, and books. Alongside this, we embrace modern learning by teaching children how to use iPads, exploring digital resources like interactive globes, and even programming robots, ensuring a well-rounded and future-ready educational experience.
Drama and the Creative Arts
At our nurseries, we’re passionate about drama and the creative arts, encouraging every child to participate. Our program offers children the chance to express themselves, explore creativity, and build confidence in front of an audience. We believe that gaining confidence at a young age can have a lasting impact, helping children develop essential skills like public speaking, teamwork, and self-expression.
Drama plays a central role in each child’s learning journey, serving as a key milestone in their development. It brings children out of their comfort zones and helps them blossom into more confident individuals. Along with boosting confidence, it enhances creativity, language development, and social skills.
Through events like our Christmas Nativity, Winter Talent Show, and Graduation Ceremony, we create lasting memories for everyone involved. It’s a milestone for children to go up and perform, and we love seeing confident children shine while supporting others to come out of their shells with gentle encouragement.
Drama and the creative arts provide a safe space for children to try new things and gain a sense of achievement, shaping their future and preparing them for school and beyond.
Digital Den
Our dynamic digital den, is a space where children can unwind and engage in a world of digital and sensory exploration. From vintage radios to interactive globes, our array of old and new technologies sparks curiosity and creativity.
Nestled amidst our digital den, our light table and sensory lights offer a tranquil space for relaxation and sensory stimulation. As they immerse themselves in music and experiment with various gadgets, children can express themselves and discover the joy of technology in a safe and inviting environment.
Outdoor Classrooms
Our expansive outdoor classrooms, where learning and play intertwine amidst the wonders of nature. With a commitment to outdoor exploration, children immerse themselves in the great outdoors throughout the day, regardless of the weather.
Our outdoor spaces are designed to cater to every age group, with three distinct areas tailored to the unique needs and interests of our young learners.
The dedicated space for our babies and 2-3s features soft artificial grass, providing a safe and comfortable environment for tiny toes to explore.
Meanwhile, our 3-5s delight in the excitement of two expansive areas, one boasting a thrilling climbing frame adorned with slides, swings, and a seesaw, while the other offers a variety of engaging activities to spark imagination and creativity. From the ‘Mud Kitchen’ for sensory-rich play, to the ‘Fire Pit’ where socialising and safety lessons take centre stage, our Outdoor Classroom sparks curiosity and creativity.
